Why Jenn Tran’s Bachelorette Contestant Devin Strader Was Called a “F--king Snake”

The drama is already blooming on The Bachelorette.
The July 15 episode showed Jenn Tran taking her journey to find love to Melbourne, Australia. For the first date, the physician assistant student invited some of the men to join her at the Queen Victoria Market. And while it was technically a group date, contestant Devin Strader wanted to squeeze in some one-on-one time.
“I feel like in a group setting a lot of people can get idled,” he said in a confessional. “I don’t want to be another guy in the group. For me, it’s always been about her and stepping up to the plate and giving her what she deserves.”
So, the freight company owner pulled her aside to get some ice cream. And while Jenn appreciated Devin creating a “little moment” for the two of them, the rest of the guys on the date didn’t feel the same way.
“I do feel disrespected that we’re on a group date, it should be a group date,” suitor Aaron Erb—who’s the twin brother of Bachelor Nation’s Noah Erb—told the cameras. “So for Devin to pull Jenn away was like, ‘Who do you think you are? All right, dude. You kind of crossed the line there.’”
Aaron later decided to steal Devin for a sec to let him know he didn’t think he was the one for Jenn—although, it didn’t help that the aerospace engineer called him Dylan. Meanwhile, Devin suggested Aaron was just mad because he wasn’t “taking charge” and talking to Jenn in the same way.
The thorny situation continued after Devin interrupted a conversation Aaron was having with Jenn on the date by (again) bringing her ice cream—leading Aaron to return the favor by crashing Devin’s chat with her only to have Devin then butt into Aaron’s discussion a second time.
“I’m not loving that Aaron and Devin are battling it out right now,” the Bachelorette admitted in a confessional. “It’s not really up my alley. I think you can do that not in front of my face.”
Even after the group date ended, the tension didn’t. At one point in the episode, Aaron gave Devin—who he again called Dylan—a book titled Principles for Self-Growth.
But Aaron wasn’t the only one to have beef with Devin. During the second group date, Jenn had her suitors participate in a photoshoot with Australian wildlife but asked only contestant Dylan Buckor to join her for dinner. As a result, the rest of the men had to leave the date early and they asked the guys back at the hotel to respect their time with Jenn at the cocktail party before the rose ceremony.
While Devin noted he wasn’t going to “fall back to the end of the line,” he said “it goes without saying that you guys deserve a little bit more.” So, the suitors weren’t thrilled when Devin was the first to pull Jenn aside at the cocktail party.
Feeling disrespected, contestant Thomas Nguyen interrupted their conversation and confronted Devin.
“Dude, you told us, ‘I will respect your time,’” Thomas said, before Devin replied, “I said, ‘I respect you guys.’ That doesn’t mean that I’m going to let you guys in front of me in line. There is no line to be had."
And Jenn—who overheard the exchange—didn’t appreciate what went down.
“You guys are making decisions for me,” she told Thomas N. after hearing about the guys’ cocktail party plans. “You’re taking my independence out of that, and I don’t really think that’s in your power. I see where you’re coming from, but do we really think those 10 minutes right there and me sitting here alone was worth it? I feel like that was taking more time."
"I think if anybody wanted to pull me first, they could have had that opportunity, too," Jenn added. "And I think we all just need to be respectful of each other.”
While Thomas N. was worried he “messed up,” Jenn ended up giving him, Devin and Aaron roses. However, it seems like the drama is continuing to grow.
“Devin a great talker,” contestant Sam McKinney—who received the first impression rose during the premiere episode—said in a confessional at the end of the episode. “The way that he carries himself, his demeanor, he’s a f--king snake.”
